Cesc Fabregas has paid a glowing tribute to his captain John Terry, who has announced that he will stay at Chelsea after months of speculation linking him away from Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea have confirmed the club captain has signed a new one-year deal to stay at the club he joined as a 14-year-old, having made 703 appearances and won 14 major trophies since his debut in 1998.

Fabregas has worked with Terry for two seasons after joining from Barcelona in 2014 for a fee in the region of £26m and is happy to continue to play alongside the former England captain.

"He has had a fantastic career for Chelsea. It is not easy nowadays to start your career somewhere and finish it [at the same club]," Fabregas told Goal.

"Very, very few players can say that, especially nowadays when everything is so tough and everyone demands so much from you and he has dealt with it very, very well and won a lot of trophies so it is very good from him."

The 35-year-old is thought to have turned down a big money Chinese Super League move having been offered a reduced wage and only one more year at Chelsea - which is standard policy at the former Premier League champions given his age.

However, the club announced on Wednesday morning that Terry would be staying after consultation with the incoming manager Antonio Conte.
