The Spaniard scored the fourth goal in the club's 4-0 win over Club Brugge on Tuesday and says that the club must do their all to challenge for the European trophy
Ander Herrera insists that Manchester United must attempt to win the Champions League, because of the club's history of winning trophies.
United were drawn into Group B of the competition on Thursday, along with PSV Eindhoven, CSKA Moscow and Wolfsburg.
Herrera concedes that United must “go step by step” as they attempt to win the club’s first European trophy since 2008 - but maintains that it is the players' responsibility to ensure that they challenge for Europe's elite prize.
"It's too early,” he replied when asked by reporters if United were challengers.
“We have to go step by step, but of course, we are representing one of the biggest clubs in the world.
"The history of the club says we have to fight for all the trophies, but we have to be prudent.
“Hopefully we can take Manchester United where they deserve to be."
United captain Wayne Rooney ended his goal drought in the club’s 4-0 win over Club Brugge on Wednesday, which secured a 7-1 aggregate win, and Herrera, who netted the fourth goal, has hailed the England international.
"It was a great night for Wayne," said Herrera. "He is our captain and leader and we are happy for him. When he scores everything is always easier for us.
"He is our captain and our leader and he is always helping us and thinking about the team.
"It is important for him to score, but it is also important for him that we win.” [GOAL]
