Don't look now, but Tiger Woods has strung together two solid rounds in a single tournament. By Sunday, he hopes it will be four.
Friday, Woods shot a 5-under 66 in the second round of the Quicken Loans National, an event he hosts and has twice won. He's 8 under for the tournament, tied for second behind David Lingmerth, who is 9 under.
The leaderboard for the Quicken Loans National, held in Gainesville, Va., at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club, is crowded at the top. As of 2:30 p.m. ET on Friday, 15 players were 6 under or better. But Woods, for the first time in what seems like years, is among the crowd.
He birdied six of his last 13 holes, including a 36-footer on his 17th hole of the day (he teed off on No. 10 and finished with the front nine).
His day:
—14 of 18 greens in regulation
—10 of 14 fairways
—28 putts
—Six birdies, one bogey
First since, best of:
—66 is his best second-round score since shooting 61 on Friday of the 2013 WGC Bridgestone Invitational.
—First time since September of 2013 he's posted two rounds of 68 or better to start a tournament.
—5 under is his best score to par this year.
—Third time this year with two straight rounds under 70.
