Smalling is one of the best players in the world, says Rooney

Wayne Rooney has indicated that his Old Trafford team-mate Chris Smalling should be considered among the best defenders in world football following his good form this season

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has suggested that team-mate Chris Smalling is "one of the top three centre-backs in the world".

Smalling, who has established himself as a regular fixture in Louis van Gaal's United side, was tipped by his manager to eventually take over the captaincy from Rooney.

And with the Red Devils skipper likewise heaping praise on the defender, the 25-year-old looks to have a ringing endorsement from England's record goalscorer.

Sunday's goalless stalemate was Smalling's 10th appearance in the league and 16th in all competitions, as he has started every game for the Old Trafford side so far.
