The England captain risked the wrath of Adidas as well as United bosses by simply wishing Bastian Schweinsteiger a happy birthday on Saturday
Poorly timed: Rooney uploaded this picture to his Facebook page on 1 August
Wayne Rooney risked landing himself in hot water with Manchester United bosses when he posted a picture of himself alongside Bastian Schweinsteiger with the pair wearing Nike shirts - on the day Adidas began their record-breaking £750m kit deal with the club.
Red Devils skipper Rooney uploaded the snap to Facebook on the day of Bastian Schweinsteiger's 31st birthday, with the caption: "Happy Birthday to Bastian Schweinsteiger. Have a good day mate!"
Adidas officials are understood to have been unimpressed with the timing of the snap uploaded by United's star player, who is personally endorsed by Nike.
A source quoted by The Sun said: "A lot of the lads marked the day but Wayne obviously didn't get the message. The Adidas guys weren't too happy."
